AZBHR has rescued over 1812 Basset Hounds and Bloodhounds since 1998. In 2014 we helped 78 hounds and placed 54 in forever homes. As of June 25, 2015, we have come to the aid of 30 hounds and placed 18 in forever homes; we are on track for another big year! The need never stops. Currently, we have over 50 hounds in our care; most of them are looking for their forever homes and will be adopted by loving families. Every dog is evaluated in a minimum two-week fostering period before they are available for adoption. We have several hounds that are “forever fosters” and due to age or medical conditions will live the rest of their life in one of our wonderful foster homes in AZBHR’s care.

AZBHR continues to work to alleviate overpopulation in our local shelters and Humane Societies, hoping to one day eliminate the senseless killing of thousands of healthy animals each year.We are a New Hope partner with the county shelters and are regularly contacted to save hounds that would be euthanized if we weren’t there to save them. We are a non-profit organization with no paid employees. Our dedicated volunteers spend countless hours to help these neglected animals by providing foster homes, checking shelters, transporting dogs to the vet, nursing injured animals back to health, and numerous other activities. Every dog is cared for and loved in a private home by foster families until they are adopted by their forever families.

AZBHR’s dog related expenses average $15,000 to $20,000 a month. We operate solely on donations and proceeds from our fundraising efforts. Fundraising events such as the Basset Ball are one of our main sources of income to pay those expenses. Our needs have increased due to many people facing hardships as a result of the bad economy. It is extremely heartbreaking, we have more hounds than ever that continue to be surrendered or left unclaimed in shelters. People are still losing their homes and jobs which create situations where they need AZBHR’s help. Sadly, some dogs have health conditions that have been neglected due to the expense of treatment the owner could not afford. All dogs taken in by AZBHR are given a complete veterinary evaluation, including vaccinations and spay/neuter if needed. Our expenses include animal shelter fees and continued veterinary care as well as supplies such as leashes, collars, medication, food, etc. The need is great and our goal is to raise as much as possible to continue our mission. We never want to say no and turn away a hound needing our help.
